Lot’s of Catalina’s in our Sailboat Library!
Our Catalina section of the sailboat library has just been updated. Almost every Catalina ever built is now online, complete with specs and links to all of the popular resources associated with each boat.
Catalina Yachts was originally founded by Frank Butler who was also the chief designer. His first design, the Catalina 22, was built in 1969. Soon after came the ever popular Catalina 27. Both the Catalina 22 and 27 turned the tide on the production of fiberglass sailboats. Buyers could finally purchase a well designed comfortable sailboat that not only sailed well but was maintenance free with their solid fiberglass construction. Other popular models like the Catalina 30 and Catalina 25 followed similar design and construction standards. Today they build cruiser/racers, like the Catalina 309 (see above) that integrate modern comforts such as open walk out sterns, built in seating into the railing, wide cockpits and folding wheels that are perfect for entertaining.
I grew up sailing with my family on a Catalina 25. The boat was extremely well-built and had ample room for four. We sailed mostly in the midwest but since it was a swing keel model we trailered her up to Lake Superior every year for vacation. Later, after I grew up (sort of, not really), my wife and I purchased our first big sailboat, a Capri 25 which we named Tough Cookie. The Capri’s were part of Catalina’s small boat and performance line at the time. We raced Tough Cookie often but also cruised with our two kids in northern Lake Michigan. Although we no longer own her she provided the perfect platform for time with the family. Now our kids have started their own families and continue with the tradition of spending time together on sailboats. Sailing on a Catalina was part of my childhood experiences that led to me becoming a better sailor and racer. They build great boats that are sure to provide memorable sailing experiences for all who choose to sail on them.
Be sure to check out Catalina and many more sailboats in our sailboat library. Lot’s of boats to look at!
